It can be extremely valuable to be aware of the available life remaining, particularly in scenarios where these devices are used vigorously. Most flash-based storage devices store your data on non-volatile NAND solid state memory. For a middle of the road solid state drive, this translates into about TB of useful life, but this can vary greatly in either direction. Regardless, for every flash-based storage device, there will come a point when no more data can be stored, and the device will fail.

Lifespan is a macOS Menu Bar application which is designed to monitor the remaining useful life for flash-based storage devices.

The Lifespan menu will display current life usage and will alert you when the device is below the threshold of useful life remaining. Armed with this knowledge, these flash-based storage devices can be retired before the risk of losing data becomes likely.

Every drive is listed in the menu, and you can see how each flash-based drive is doing in simple percentage terms. It then quietly logs results and stays completely out of your way — unless it finds a serious problem.

Then it will alert you to the issue and open the Checkmate dashboard so you not only get a full report of the issue, but also read suggested steps you can take to correct the problem. No buttons to push, no schedules to set and no interruptions to your work. If you count on your Macintosh, make sure your Macintosh counts on Checkmate. Swo Jan 18 I don’t at all understand all the ire directed at Checkmate, and not to start a debate, but what Checkmate does is very, very obvious. Nor do I see why that’s particularly difficult to understand, and as to other applications with similar functionality, I know Drive Genius 4 has a similar function but am unsure if it works in the same fashion though I am unaware of any freeware or shareware apps with such a comprehensive feature set. You set Checkmate up, and it scans your computer at certain times, informing you what it has discovered.

Personally I prefer to know about problems before they escalate, because often in those early stages I find can make all the difference. How it does what it does? I know there’s a daemon working in the background, but as for the particulars, I have no idea. Then again, I also don’t know the purpose of half the electronics in a modern car, yet that lack of knowledge won’t stop me from driving If I need to do so.

It works just fine for me, now if Micromat will only update the UI, which is unnecessarily huge and in need of a refreshening. GeogProf Jul 31 Checkmate brings to bear exactly zero tools to fix any and all problems it might discover. This is such featureless and incapable software that even its developer is at a loss for words to articulate its virtues. His smarmy product description above goes on for 4 paragraphs without saying much about what Checkmate actually does and even less about how it does it.

B-Jefferson-Le-Blanc May 21 The in-app update doesn’t work. The first time I tried I got the spinning beach ball of death – the app froze up. A day later I tried a second time and got a server unavailable message. With no other easy that is, user friendly way to update I tend to agree with the negative reviews of this app.

The only really useful feature is the surface scans it does of my hard drives, which run in the background, that take too long to do with TechTool Pro to be practical. But they all depend on a drive’s ability to diagnose its own problems.

The only reliable way to ensure against drive failure is with regular backups. In principal this utility is an adjunct to TechTool Pro and provides a form of system monitoring that most of us would not do manually with TTP.

I do use TTP from time to time to perform other tasks, like file and drive defragmentation. But it seems to be taking Micromat an unseemly long time to get Checkmate up to par. Wts May 20 Thinking about buying this doctor for my mac’s however why is it better than TechToolPro 7?

Or is it just another computer vitamin pill we all think will cure us? JosephF Mar 25 I bought Checkmate some time ago for my iMac with OS Recently I had trouble with many programs freezing and very slow response. My iMac was determined to have a failing hard drive. Its replacement cured all the problems. During this time Checkmate continuously checked the drive and found nothing wrong.

What is Checkmate supposed to detect? Stuke May 21 It does nothing. B-Jefferson-Le-Blanc Mar 19 Perhaps the issues are hardware specific. Time will tell. I certainly would not discount other people’s experience. I’ve found Micromat support to be very responsive. I had some problems when I first started using Checkmate. It turned out, after extensive troubleshooting, to be a problem with permissions in my user folder. So, though Checkmate did not report that problem, the problems I had with Checkmate led me to discover the source of the trouble.

So Checkmate helped indirectly. Which is often the case in troubleshooting. That said, the Checkmate interface is too cute by half and not nearly as useful as it could be. For one thing, the bright blue background color in the app window makes reading the status and logs difficult because of the low contrast, even with the thick black text it uses. The lack of scroll bars is also an issue; so is the fixed window size. I use Checkmate primarily because of the surface scan feature – which is not supposed to run while you are using the computer.

Other functions operate in the background and I’ve found no undue stress by Checkmate on system resources in Activity Monitor. Nevertheless, a high number of bad blocks can be a sign of impending drive failure and I’ve found SMART tests are an unreliable indicators.

The only sure way to find bad blocks is by scanning the surface of the hard drive. For the reasons I’ve stated I cannot give Checkmate a rave review.

Nevertheless, I’ve had fewer issues than some people so I thought it was worth reporting. Paul-Sondervan Mar 14

Disk and system utilities, like our flagship product TechTool Pro, are great for repairing disk issues and recovering data after something goes terribly wrong.

But what if there was a way to catch these problems sooner? What if there was a product that would continuously monitor all of the important parameters of your system and run regular diagnostic tests to detect small problems before they turn into complete disasters? Introducing Checkmate, the computer health monitoring software by Micromat. We created Checkmate to be a powerful computer diagnostic product without being an intrusion to your work.

The software observes your schedule and performs testing when your computer is idle. Customize any of these or create your own suite from scratch to test your Mac exactly as you would like. Start with Check Computer to perform a complete diagnostic check of your Mac and hard drives.

If problems are found, advice is provided on how to proceed to repair the problem. Use Check Computer regularly as a part of your preventive maintenance program. Customize testing using built-in preferences. Techtool Pro will test, rebuild, and repair damaged directories on corrupted Mac OS Extended hard drives, and optimize the data directories when they are repaired.

When rebuilding Mac OS Extended volumes, Volume Rebuild will display a comparison chart before directory data is replaced. Use Volume Rebuild to keep your drives operating at their peak performance.

In most utilities, just the overall results – passed or failed – are reported to the user. In the failed state, often there is little or no time to back up data before the drive fails entirely. Previous versions of Techtool Pro reported the overall status of each attribute, but some attributes don’t contribute to the failure of a drive. Techtool Pro now knows which attributes contribute to drive failure, and will report a failing result before the drive fails completely.

Giving you time to rescue your data. Using Techtool Pro, you can easily create an eDrive, an extra startup partition based on the active system volume, which can be used as an emergency startup partition or to perform regular maintenance on your Mac.

Using the eDrive, there’s no need to reformat or to boot from a DVD or secondary hard drive. If needed, the eDrive’s size can be expanded to fit your needs. Techtool Pro will test and repair hard drive partition maps.

The Partition Map test will verify the health of the partition map and the Partition Repair tool will repair any errors found in the partition map. RAM problems are quite prevalent and can cause a variety of crashes, program errors and even data loss. We’ve seen many cases where a user will be chasing down a disk or extension problem when their issue was simply a faulty and inexpensively replaced memory module.

As part of the RAM test, we’ve also added an SPD report that shows you an enormous amount of technical and other interesting information about your computer’s memory. Volume Cloning creates exact duplicates of your volumes for trouble-free archiving to backup your data and applications.

Cloning volumes can also be helpful if you are upgrading from a smaller size hard drive to a larger drive. You have the options of creating a duplicate of an entire disk, file syncing by adding only the changed files to a clone, or cloning to numerous disc image formats. If you have an available drive, you can even use the tool to optimize disks that are especially fragmented. Techtool Pro performs both file and volume optimization.

File optimization defragments individual files on the hard drive. Volume optimization consolidates the free space on a hard drive. For full optimization, perform Volume Optimization after File Optimization. The resulting optimization simplifies the file storage layout and may enhance the overall performance of your drive.

Use Techtool Pro to measure disk speed. Drive manufacturers advertise speeds that may not be realistic for real-world use, depending on the connection used, etc. Find out how your drive actually performs using the Drive Speed tool. Use the Internet Speed tool to measure your real-world internet connection speed. Many speed test websites optimize to give the best speed possible.

The Internet speed tool uses the same servers used to host a large percentage of the internet so you can gauge realistic performance. Create longer lasting APFS snapshots that can be used to recover accidentally deleted files, even if a backup is unavailable. Create snapshots automatically using the new Snapshot Usage feature in Techtool Protection, and mount and recover from your snapshots using the Snapshot Recovery tool.

Techtool Pro tests internal Mac laptop batteries as well as the batteries in iOS devices. For iOS battery testing, trusted devices can be tested over WiFi as well as through a wired connection. Techtool Pro helps you recover your data from corrupted drives or volumes that don’t mount on the desktop to save the data to another location. Get an objective measurement of your Mac’s processor performance.

The Processor Benchmark tool uses industry-standard measurement algorithms to test processor performance. Using this tool, you can get metrics that can be used to compare processor speeds apples-to-apples. Avoids the confusion of comparison using Clock Frequency. Techtool can test your Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Ethernet and any other network interface.

Troubleshoot problems staying connected to Wi-Fi, or problems connecting to Bluetooth peripherals such as speakers, keyboards, and more. Techtool Pro will monitor the configuration of your local area network LAN by revealing the active services and ports on each selected machine or Bonjour supported device on your LAN. This information is important for strengthening security on a specific machine, Bonjour supported device or your overall LAN, and is also helpful in tracking what devices have been in use in the past that are no longer available since the last time monitoring was performed.

Need an older version of Techtool Pro? Additional information about APFS compatibility. As a result, the eDrive and Protogo features are not available on these Macs. Solid state drives do not benefit from defragmentation, which only serves to wear out those drives sooner. Optimization for APFS rotational drives is not yet possible with the current amount of APFS documentation provided by Apple, which currently provides insufficient documentation for defragmenting a disk.
